Skateboarding for Fun and Fitness
Skateboarding for Fun and Fitness
In case you didn't notice, skateboarding is on the fast track to becoming one of the words hottest sports. Not only is skateboarding lots of fun, it's a great way to stay fit without having to endure boring gym workouts. Propelling your weight on a skateboard will help enhance aerobic endurance. Add hills, and you'll be working even harder. If you decide to learn some skateboarding tricks, you'll be reaping the benefits of plyometric exercise, as well as getting a great leg and core workout. As if that was not enough, skateboarding improves your balance, coordination and agility, especially if you practice performing tricks.
A Brief History of Skateboarding
When you think about it, it seems quite logical that skateboarding began in California. When the waves were flat, California surfers needed an alternate hobby to feed the habit. The first skateboards displayed the utmost creativity. Roller skate wheels were attached to wooden boxes or boards. Then, in the 1960s, an LA surf shop owner arranged a deal with the Chicago Roller Skate Company. They would supply the wheels, and the surf store would attach them to wooden boards. Thus, the first commercial skateboard was born. It wasn't long before surfboard manufacturers caught on to this trend. Makaha was the first surfboard company to create a skateboard. By 1965, the sport had its own championships, as well as a Skateboarder magazine, which was a publication that was dedicated to the sport.
Reinventing the Skateboard Wheel
In the 1970s, a man by the name of Frank Nasworthy invented a polyurethane skateboard wheel. The fatter and softer wheels provided better traction and a smoother ride, which made the sport more beginnerfriendly. Skateboarding experienced a surge in popularity. As skateboarders across the country experimented in empty swimming pools, tricks such as the kicktail, the invert and the ollie were developed.
In 1995, skateboarding gained a new form of respect when it was featured on ESPN's Extreme Games, which took place in Rhode Island. In 1997, it was included as a Cross Over event in the Winter X Games. It's interesting to know that the gradual respect for the sport seemed to develop within the same timeline as snowboarding, which was also regarded as a "rebel" sport. However, as the "older generation" comes to realize that outdoor activity is the perfect antidote to drug use, they are finally respecting these activities as legitimate sports.

Sportline Pedometers
Sportline pedometers vary from simple mechanical models to the highend digital varieties that keep track of the time you exercise and even how many calories you've burned. The Sportline products vary because people differ in their exercise programs: walking pedometers generally count steps or distance, while their more complex gadgets do much more. The first thing you need to determine is what exercising you'll do and what you want to monitor.
Simple step counters, like the Sportline 341 Pedometer, offer the most basic features. You can set this counter for your average stride length and start walkingit gives you your mileage in tenthmile increments, like a car's odometer. No bells and whistles here, not even an electronic readout, just a lowtech mileage counter for the budget walker.
While the 341 pedometer is at one end of the functionality range, other Sportline pedometers are more versatile. The 360 model, for instance, has two digital display lines, and measures mileage, steps, speed, calories, exercise time and displays the current time, too. It's a new design that's easy to use and easy to see, making progress checks during your workout a piece of cakeas long at it's lowfat.
The Talking 343 Step counter is one of the most interesting Sportline pedometers: with a touch of a button, it will tell you your step total, distance, and the time of day. It also comes with seven melodies of varying tempos that change when your walking speed changes. Sportline has all sorts of pedometers for all kinds of people and exercise programs.

1959 Plymouth Sport Fury
1959 Plymouth Sport Fury
Detroit has long played name games of the type used on the 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury, and often to the great confusion of car buyers. Thus have the automakers trotted out allnew models with old handles, to cash in on past glories, or created new titles to make old cars seem new.
Classic Cars Image Gallery
In the 1950s, the industry hit upon a variation that's still in widespread use. Its called the "trickledown game." A new name appears on a topend model or series, then filters to the bottom of the line via elimination of older and/or lowerstatus names. History is full of examples: Bel Air and Impala at Chevrolet, Fairlane and Galaxie at Ford.
Chrysler Corporation is a past master at the sport, and it added an interesting twist with Plymouth's 1959 Sport Fury. The Fury began as a speedy, limitededition 1956 hardtop, and continued as such for the next two years.
Though never a big seller, it cast a performance image over the entire Plymouth line with obvious sales implications, and division marketers just couldn't resist trying to capitalize on it.
Accordingly, they put the Fury label on all topoftheline 1959 Plymouths except Suburban wagons, removed Plaza nameplates from lowend models, and pushed Belvedere and Savoy down a notch. The only problem this created was what to call the limited edition. Well, the 19561958 Fury had definitely been sporty, so why not name its 1959 successor Sport Fury? That they did.
And for the first time they offered their hottest car as a convertible as well as the customary hardtop coupe. Curiously, though, the new standard Fury line didn't list a ragtop, just a pair of hardtops and a fourdoor sedan.
For all the name shuffling, the 1959 Furys, standard and Sport, were far less "limited" than the highpowered stormers of 19561958. Where the latter had seen only 4,5007,500 copies a year, the Sport Fury ran close to 24,000 units all by itself, and standard Fury reached nearly 65,000.
Of course, this was just what the sales department wanted, and it helped Plymouth hold onto third place in recovery 1959 despite total volume that rose by only 15,000 units while Chevrolet gained more than 300,000 units, Ford nearly half a million.
